2018 Prospects for summer

Skrifað 31/05/2018

River Water Levels:

Many anglers keep careful watch on spring-time water levels in their favorite rivers in the hopes of correctly anticipating the angling summer ahead. Nordurá is particularly sensitive to a lack of spring runoff and is often low and dry come August. However, most rivers in Western and North-Western Iceland wrestle with the same issue as the area tends to have long dry spells during the summer.

This year things look positive as there is more snow in the mountains than usual, with ravines and crevasses full of snow since November. This early snow has repeatedly thawed and refrozen creating a hard layer of pack ice that melts slowly throughout the summer, keeping water levels stable. We at Norðurá are therefor very optimistic about the summer water levels.

The Fishing Lodge:

This winter we completed the final touches to refurbishing the new fishing lodge at Rjúpnaás by Norðurá. As most of our readers know the new building we opened last summer was built quickly and needed a few final touches to properly conclude the build. The lodge has 14 new bedrooms, each with river views and separate bathrooms. The lodge also offers a lovely sauna with showers and a bathroom, a wader room with bathroom for anglers. The reception area with bar now offers views over the river and Myrkhylur. The sitting room in the old part of the lodge was completely refurbished as well, offering guests a renewed and comfortable place to relax. Last year's guests were very happy with the new accommodation and we hope to top that this coming summer season.

Fishing prospects for the Summer 2018:

After two excellent spawning years, with a great deal of the salmon fry making their way into the ocean, we believe that this summer will offer great angling with plenty of salmon running upriver. Despite not being able to promise anything on behalf of mother nature, there is plenty of evidence pointing towards this being a bountiful summer, with runs of large, trophy salmon in June followed by plentiful runs of smaller salmon later in the season.
