Norðurá is still in the throes of winter. Now follow the long bright spring evenings since we have passed the equinox. This is the time to reminiscence over last years salmon catches and hopes for the summer to come.
Continuous research has been conducted on the Norðurá basin since 1988. A report published recently by the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute of Iceland recorded 1.692 salmon caught in Norðurá in 2018. Of these 84% were small salmon and 30% of them were released again. Large salmon that have spent 2 years or more in the sea were 16% of the catch and almost all were released again or 96.6%.
Of the 2018 catch half originated in the 2012 spawning, a rather poor year, and a third of the catch originated in the 2013 spawning, a very strong year. The share of large salmon in the catch has increased in recent years following the common practice of catch and release with 40% of total catches released again in 2018. Hopefully the main origin of the catch in the following summer will be from the good spawning year of 2013. This should increase the likelihood of a good angling summer.
